The EU Foreign Affairs Council adopted its conclusions regarding the future approach to EU budget support for third countries. Its aim is to strengthen coordination between Member States’s approaches to budget support, through systematic exchange of information and of expertise in the field.

This week, the European Think Tanks Group – ODI, ECDPM, FRIDE and DIE – sent an Open Letter to the European Commission – to Commission President, José Manuel Barroso, High Representative Catherine Ashton and the Commissioner for Development, Andris Piebalgs.

In the letter, we urge appropriate action to be taken to enable development to play its essential role in shaping more coherent EU global action, particularly within the context of the agreement reached on the functioning of the European External Action Service (EAS) amongst Foreign Affairs Ministers in the Council on 26 April. The European Think Tanks Group launched their recently published report, New Challenges, New Beginnings: Next Steps in European Development Cooperation in the UK Parliament today.  Chaired by Baroness Joyce Quin, Co-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary European Union Group, Martin Dinham (DFID), Simon Maxwell (ODI) and Richard Youngs (FRIDE) shared their views on the new vision for European development cooperation.
